How Does Resale Work?

From used item to completed sale, step by step.

Resale works by moving a previously owned item through a structured path: sourcing it, verifying and pricing it, listing it, and completing a sale with payment and delivery. Every resale business is some version of that path, and the differences between them come down to who does each step.

Sourcing is where it begins. Supply comes from individuals clearing closets, from returns, from overstock, and increasingly from brand trade-in programs. Acquiring that supply cheaply and reliably is the first hard problem in resale.

Verification and pricing come next. Goods are checked for authenticity and condition, then priced against demand. In peer-to-peer models the seller does this; in managed models the platform does. This step is where trust and margin are set.

Finally the item is listed, sold, paid for, and shipped. The platform takes its cut through a take rate or commission. Do this reliably over thousands of items a day and a closet-clearing habit becomes an industry.
