Luxury and mass-market resale platforms share a category name but run almost opposite businesses. Luxury platforms invest heavily in authentication and provenance for high-value goods. Mass-market platforms optimize for volume and low friction on everyday items.
The cost structures diverge completely. Luxury resale funds experts and inspection from high commissions on expensive goods. Mass-market resale strips cost out to move large volumes of low-price items profitably.
For the business reader, treating these as one market is a mistake. They compete for different supply, serve different buyers, and win on entirely different capabilities: trust at the top, efficiency at the bottom.
