Proving an item is real, and why the whole market depends on it.

Authentication in luxury resale is the process of verifying that a pre-owned designer item is genuine rather than counterfeit. It usually combines trained specialists examining hardware, stitching, serial numbers, and materials with technology that flags suspect listings. For luxury platforms, it is not a feature, it is the foundation of trust.

The stakes are total. A single fake that reaches a buyer can damage a platform's reputation permanently and expose it to legal risk. That is why authentication capability, not marketing, is often the real competitive moat in luxury resale.

Authentication is also expensive, which shapes the business. It requires expertise, time, and process, and those costs must be funded by commission or fees. Platforms that authenticate well can charge more and command higher-value supply. Platforms that cut corners eventually pay for it.

For the industry, the interesting question is who can authenticate a product best. Increasingly the answer is the brand itself, which is one reason brands are moving into resale territory that platforms once owned uncontested.
