A record 58 percent of Americans bought secondhand in 2024

ThredUp’s 2025 Resale Report, its thirteenth annual edition, found that a record 58 percent of US consumers shopped secondhand apparel in 2024, and framed resale as a hedge for shoppers bracing for tariff-driven price increases on new clothing. The report projected online resale would grow at a 13 percent compound rate to reach 40 billion dollars, roughly four times the pace of the broader retail clothing sector.

The tariff angle was the new note. When the price of new goods rises on policy rather than demand, secondhand becomes the release valve, and the report positioned resale as structurally advantaged in exactly that environment.
