Rolex CPO channel grows total secondhand watch market despite dealer share loss, sellers tell Glossy

Rolex's certified pre-owned program has captured market share from existing secondhand watch dealers and marketplaces since its launch, Glossy reported. Despite that competitive pressure, many sellers told the outlet that the overall expansion of the secondhand watch market has justified the shift.

The watch manufacturer's entry into resale has been described by market participants as both rapid and significant in scale, Glossy reported. Dealers indicated that the net effect on their businesses has been positive due to category-level growth outweighing the direct share loss to Rolex's own channel.

Brand-operated certified pre-owned programs can simultaneously cannibalize independent resellers and enlarge the total addressable market. Rolex's move validates secondhand watches to consumers who previously avoided the category due to authentication concerns or brand mistrust. That legitimacy dividend appears to be lifting transaction volume enough that multi-brand platforms and independent dealers still see net gains, even as they lose exclusive access to Rolex inventory. The dynamic suggests that in high-value, authentication-sensitive categories, brand entry may be accretive rather than zero-sum.
