eBay to buy Depop from Etsy for 1.2 billion dollars

eBay agreed to acquire fashion resale marketplace Depop from Etsy for about 1.2 billion dollars, a deal aimed at strengthening eBay’s fashion offering and drawing a younger demographic, first reported as the largest resale deal of the period. Etsy exits a property that never fit its handmade-goods core; eBay gains a Gen Z-heavy fashion community it has struggled to build organically.

Consolidation at this size tells operators where the value is settling. The independent mid-size platform is becoming an acquisition target rather than an endgame, and the buyers are the generalist giants assembling category coverage.

NUMBERS

Secondhand hit 55.5 billion dollars in the US in 2025

US secondhand fashion sales reached 55.5 billion dollars in 2025, about 12 percent of total apparel spending, according to figures cited in Forbes reporting on the sector. The framing that stuck: resale has become the fashion industry’s new value flywheel, feeding supply back into the market rather than sending it to landfill.

A flywheel is the right image. Every resold garment is both a sale today and a supply source tomorrow, which is why the category compounds in a way one-directional retail does not.
